WhiteWave Foods Commits to Haiti Relief Donation

The US producer of Silk Soymilk and Horizon Organic brands has committed to a sizeable product donation to the NGO “Feed the Children”, in the hope that Silk and Horizon products can help feed those in need in Haiti. Headquartered in Colorado, WhiteWave is a pioneer in creating healthy, innovative, and responsibly produced foods.

Feed the Children is a US-based NGO with a branch also in Canada. Their mission is to provide food to people in need, both in the USA and in many foreign countries. They also have the capability to collect and warehouse food donations and are working with a variety of recipient organizations in Haiti.

WhiteWave is among a number of major soyfood companies internationally who have provided commitments to Haiti and cooperation with the ad-hoc international group dubbed ‘SHARE’ for Soyfoods Haiti Alliance Relief Effort. Work is underway to solicit more donations as well as to facilitate logistics and distribution. In this regard, NGOs such as Feed the Children, have emerged as partners to receive and distribute the soyfood donations. Contact with World Food Program has also revealed their request for cooking oil and ready-to-eat foods.

Currently there are about 250,000 people receiving food relief in Haiti while estimates of the actual number needing such support are about 900,000.  Delivery to beneficiaries still faces huge challenges. Some donated products are piling up at the airport for lack of distribution logistics and coordination. Last week the seaport finally began receiving and unloading ships.

UN aid workers fanned out across the Haitian capital yesterday to set up permanent distribution sites they hope will smooth the flow of food to the hundreds of thousands living in ramshackle tent camps.

Further donations will be needed for the foreseeable future. These should include protein-rich snacks, ready-to-eat foods, beverages and quick-cook products, as well as cooking oil.  Eventually, and on a longer-term basis, donations could include soybeans, soy protein ingredients and micro-nutrient supplements for value-added processing in Haiti.

Alliance partners, Malnutrition Matters in North America and Bridge2Food in Europe, are working to solicit and expedite soyfoods donations. The US-based World Soy Foundation is accepting financial donations and can issue US tax receipts.

Alpro, Solae and Vitasoy Provide Support for Haiti

Further to a multinational effort to promote and facilitate soyfoods donations for Haiti, a number of major companies have already provided commitments. These include: Alpro NV, Europe’s leading soyfood company, Solae LLC, the world leader in soy-based ingredients, and Vitasoy USA Inc., the pioneer of soymilk in America.

Alpro and Solae have committed financial support for the effort, while considering further options, Vitasoy will be donating aseptic beverages. Other major soyfoods producers are expected to announce their contributions shortly.

With the ad-hoc international group dubbed ‘SHARE’ for Soyfoods Haiti Alliance Relief Effort, work is underway to solicit more donations as well as to facilitate logistics and distribution. In this regard, a number of NGOs have also emerged as potential partners to receive and distribute the soyfoods or other related aid. Contact with World Food Program is also underway and they have requested cooking oil and ready-to-eat foods.

Related good news is that the main seaport in Haiti has been re-opened and is beginning to receive and unload ships. Some reports indicate that 500,000 or more people will have to be moved to camps outside of Port au Prince. This scenario will require a massive and ongoing feeding program as well as the obvious need for shelter and medical support.

Further donations are needed.  These should include protein-rich snacks, ready-to-eat foods, beverages and quick-cook products as well as cooking oil.  Eventually, and on a longer-term basis, donations could include soybeans, soy protein ingredients and micro-nutrient supplements for value-added processing in Haiti.

Soyfoods for Haiti Alliance Being Developed Internationally

In cooperation with various soyfoods-related entities, including the US-based World Soy Foundation and the European organization Bridge2Food (formerly PROSOY Research and Strategy), the Canadian non-profit Malnutrition Matters is developing a multi-national SoyFoods Haiti Alliance Relief Effort or "SHARE".

The overriding principle of this effort is to promote and facilitate the donation and delivery of soy-based foods to Haiti. These should include protein-rich snacks, ready-to-eat foods, beverages and quick-cook products. Eventually, and on a longer-term basis, it could include soybeans, soy protein ingredients and micro-nutrient supplements for value-added processing in Haiti.

The initial effort is to develop the alliance and encourage participation by various potential allies. In this regard the first action is to introduce web pages for Canada, Europe and the USA, which will list contact names and related information. Eventually these pages will be able to cross-reference information and contacts and include: names of committed donor companies, strategic support allies, related NGOs, shipping and logistic information, etc. The ultimate outcome should be that entities in each region would benefit from information sourced from others, such that synergies and ideas would evolve to help feed the people of Haiti beyond the initial emergency relief supplies.

The various web pages would evolve, perhaps daily, to include updated news, contacts and other information. For people interested in visiting these sites more than once, it will be important to click on their web browser's refresh button to be able to see the new information.
